Who Says Alfredo Can’t be Healthy? It Can if You Use Quality Ingredients!
You can have homemade Alfredo pizza without sacrificing your wallet, health, and taste. I prefer to make my own Alfredo sauce over any sauce that comes in a jar. There isn’t much to it and you can make a lot of it to feed you and your family throughout several meals.
I prefer to start with a typical Chicken Alfredo Pasta and use the leftover sauce on a pizza the next day. I do a lot of my shopping at Aldi because I can count on most of their products to be made with fewer food coloring additives made in a lab and more natural flavorings from spices for their coloring. It’s also usually much cheaper than name brands. Score!
Cheese Cheese and More Cheese! Who Doesn’t Love Cheese?
When I think about buying cheese, Central Market tends to be the place that comes to my mind. If you haven’t seen their cheese department, you have to check it out. They have so many varieties to choose from. I love their goat cheese mozzarella. They have all sorts of cheeses from sheep, goats, and cows and also from many different regions. I can go crazy overboard in their cheese department in no time. However, I love Aldi’s cheese department as well. They have come with reasonably priced products on their shelf and some pretty great options to choose from.
What is Alfredo pizza made of?
It has your typical Alfredo Sauce, Cheese, Italian Seasoning, Chicken or any other meat or veggie you prefer and the Dough. You can use a jar sauce, but it won’t be as good as a sauce you can make. By making the sauce yourself, you can control what goes into it. You can choose full fat dairy or skim to your preference.
Let’s Start with the Alfredo Sauce. It’s So Easy to Make and Delicious. It goes a LONG way!
For my Alfredo sauce, I most typically buy their Italian-style blend and their mozzarella blend shredded bags. I don’t mind that it has a coating to it since it also works as a thickening agent in my sauce. I also buy a container of shredded Parmesan cheese. I love this stinky-flavored cheese in my sauce. The best butter you can use for this is Irish butter. Aldi has a knockoff Kerrygold butter that is almost as good. For cooking, it works just as well. However, I also have used regular salted butter sticks. I prefer butter to oil for cooking my sauces because we love butter! If you want a thicker sauce, adding cream cheese will ensure that the sauce is not loose for your pizza. The last of your cream requirements is milk. I prefer full-fat milk to any other style. We believe that healthy fats are good fats and we don’t limit that in our lives.
The only seasonings I add to my sauce are Italian seasoning and garlic powder. If it needs salt, I use Himalayan sea salt. Crushed red pepper is a great addition if everyone likes a bit of spice to it. I am a strong believer in adding seasonings while the milk is being heated to extract that flavor into the base of the sauce. It’s all about flavor in this house. We don’t do bland foods!
All you need to do is melt about 4 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium heat and add 2 cups of milk. I add 1-2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. You can be generous with it or use less to your taste. I would add half a teaspoon of crushed red pepper if that is something you prefer.
Once the milk and butter are combined and heated, add 4 oz of cream cheese. You will need to smash it while it melts while stirring occasionally. After the cream cheese is melted and combined, I add a cup of shredded Italian blend cheese. I let that have a chance to melt while stirring. I then add up to a cup of parmesan cheese and stir that as it is melting as well. Lastly, I had half of a cup of mozzarella up to a cup depending on how loose your sauce appears.
Be sure to keep stirring so that your cheese doesn’t burn on the bottom of the pan. I use a whisk to stir my sauce. You will need to keep the sauce on the heat until the cheese is melted and you no longer see clumps and bits in the milk. It will thicken as standing. Finally, once the sauce has combined and to your desired texture, add your salt to taste.
We love this sauce with fettucini noodles and chicken or Italian sausage. I have even sauteed pancetta and added it on top. This recipe makes a lot of sauce! I refrigerate it and use it on my pizza dough.
Don’t be turned off by the idea of making a pizza from scratch. It’s actually one of th easiest things to make. You really can’t mess it up as long as you grease your pan!
When I make my pizzas, I use the Aldi Pizza Dough. It makes the best pizzas! I make sure I always grease my pan so the dough doesn’t adhere to the pan while baking. You will need to stretch the dough out like they used to show in the Domino’s pizza commercials. I add melted butter on top of the dough and sprinkle garlic powder over it.
Next, I add a layer of my cold alfredo sauce. Don’t use it too much or it will run! Follow that with some mozzarella cheese. You can use leftover chicken and Italian sausage as your meat or just add deli-sliced salami. I cover it with Italian blend cheese and more parmesan cheese on top and extra mozzarella. Lastly, I sprinkle more garlic powder and Italian seasoning on top.
I like to use the Instant Pot Air Fryer Oven to bake my pizzas. I set it to around 375 and bake for 10-15 minutes. You will want to keep an eye on it!
